It’s no exaggeration to say that the brakes may be one of the most critical safety features in your Volkswagen model, so keeping them in good shape is crucial. We can help at Rochester Volkswagen, your local VW service center near Chester and Douglas, Minnesota. Take a look at this page to find out more about the brake services we offer!
You must have your VW model’s brakes inspected regularly. Services like brake pad replacement and brake rotor service are performed based on the condition of the parts rather than on mileage, so inspection helps our technicians gauge when those services need to be performed. Our technicians will also look at the master cylinder, brake calipers, and brake lines when they inspect your VW’s brakes.
Brake pads are made up of two main parts: a metal backing that attaches to the calipers and a softer brake lining that presses against the rotors. Since this lining is softer to reduce friction damage to the rotors, it will wear down sooner. When the brake lining is thin, you need to have the brake pads replaced to avoid damage.
If the brake rotors in your VW are too thin, they will need to be replaced, as well. However, they can also become glazed or warped while still being thick enough. If that happens, we may be able to resurface these parts.
Brake fluid is what takes the force of your foot on the brake pedal and transfers it to the calipers, causing them to squeeze together. It also amplifies this force as it goes. Since it’s a hygroscopic fluid, it will absorb moisture. Over time, this can cause damage, so you should have the brake fluid exchanged when necessary.
