Having brakes that function at peak performance is extremely important. Ignoring brakes that are grinding could have dire consequences. In fact, the National Highway Safety Administration has determined that faulty brakes could be a factor in as many as 25% of all road accidents! Read on for a more detailed description on why car brakes can start grinding, and why you shouldn’t wait to get the issue addressed.

My Brakes are Grinding When Stopping

If you notice that your brakes are making noise when you apply them, then here are a few potential underlying reasons:

  • If you hear your brakes grinding when you’re slowing down, your brake pads are most likely the culprit. As brake pads lose thickness over time due to the friction associated with stopping, a squealing noise called “brake scrubbing” occurs. But as the pads wear down even further, you’ll start to hear your brakes grinding instead.
  • If you hear a sharper grinding noise, it could be the sound of your brake disc and calipers. You probably will also feel a rumble in your pedal if this is the case. This scenario could require a brake pad replacement as well as a disc or rotor replacement.
  • If you hear brakes grinding when stopping at full force, it could be your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Your ABS will activate if you apply the full brakes, and it could even cause vibrations in the brake pedal itself.

My Brakes are Grinding When Driving

Do you hear your brakes making a grinding noise as you’re driving around Dodge Center? If that’s the case, you could just have debris, like a rock caught in your calipers and rotors bouncing around. While this is an easy fix, it’s best taken care of ASAP to avoid causing further damage. Luckily, our service department can help!
